This measurement area addresses how seafood companies manage and monitor environmental impacts throughout their supply chains. Good management of these impacts allows companies to build long-term value for all stakeholders involved in their supply chains.

Charoen Pokphand Foods leads the benchmark in its stewardship of the supply chain, followed by BioMar Group, Thai Union Group and Mowi. All four display high levels of transparency around both their traceability and sourcing commitments as well as their performance, disclosing detailed information about the legal origins of their marine and/or terrestrial ingredients and providing evidence of their efforts to increase the proportion of ingredients that come from well-managed and certified sources. However, performance in this area is more mixed across other companies in the benchmark. Many lack disclosures around their traceability and sourcing in addition to their supply chain management practices, therefore hampering their performance. Furthermore, companies vary in their efforts to reduce their environmental footprint, with very few offering evidence of how they systematically address all key environmental issues: greenhouse gas emissions, freshwater use, food loss and waste, and plastic use. Even fewer companies provide evidence of programmes or initiatives that focus on these issues both across their own operations and within their supply chains.
