The World Benchmarking Alliance benchmarks the 30 most influential companies in the seafood industry. Their significant influence on the world’s fishing business means that they can accelerate positive change. These 30 companies set the standard for others in the industry, due to their size, influence and reach. For example, Mowi, Lerøy (Austevoll Seafood ASA), Cermaq (Mitsubishi Corporation), Salmar and Cooke are the largest global producers of farmed salmon. They are all included in this benchmark.

About the companies

The concept of ‘keystone actors’, which was introduced by Österblom and colleagues, suggests that the largest companies in a given industry have a disproportionate effect on the structure and function of the system in which they operate. Similar to the Seafood Business for Ocean Stewardship (SeaBOS) initiative, the Seafood Stewardship Index hinges on this concept.

Given their influential position, the largest companies can address serious problems that are linked to seafood production, for example, food insecurity in developing countries, human rights violations, and Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing worldwide. These companies are often at the forefront of new developments and investments within their sector and set a model for other firms to follow. Most of these companies also work with thousands of business partners throughout their value chains. By setting sustainability standards, creating incentives and providing support to other companies, these large companies have potential for substantial leveraged impact in driving the transition to more sustainable, responsible and inclusive seafood value chains.
